Mariah Carey had a disastrous performance on New Year’s Eve. Her manager, Stella Bulochnikov, has offered an explanation – ABC wanted it that way.
Carey was meant to close Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest with a bang. Instead, she exerted a scarcely audible whimper, as her performance was plagued with acoustic issues.
A quarrel occurred on Sunday, with Carey’s team and ABC’s producers on opposing sides.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Bulochnikov asserted that ABC was aware of these complications – they were informed of Carey’s malfunctioning mic pack on three occasions – and they neglected to act. Furthermore, Bulochnikov adds that ABC desired an inadequate show from Carey “to get ratings.”
Bulochnikov is angry with Michael Schimmel, an ABC television executive, and the production company behind the program, claiming they allowed Carey’s reputation to suffer. Had they wanted to, they could have switched to a commercial or another live feed, she says.
Dick Clark Productions, the studio responsible for the show, insists they were uninvolved with the technical hitches, citing an internal investigation which yielded no connection. Additionally, the notion they “would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”
