Margot Robbie Earns $50 Million From Her Hit ‘Barbie’
Margot Robbie will earn $50 million for starring and producing the hit movie Barbie. This total includes her salary from the film and the box office bonuses she will receive.
Barbie, which came out on July 21 in theaters, has made more than $1 billion worldwide at box offices. This officially makes the director Greta Gerwig the highest-paid female director for a live-action movie.
Robbie produced the film alongside her husband Tom Ackerley and the production company she co-owns with Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, LuckyChap Entertainment. Her company has produced other well-known films including Birds of Prey and Promising Young Woman, which won an Oscar.
Robbie selected Gerwig herself to co-write and direct the project with Gerwig’s partner Noah Baumbach. Baumbach has directed numerous films including Marriage Story, which won one Academy Award and one Golden Globe, France Ha, White Noise, Greenberg and The Meyerowitz Stories.
Originally Robbie decided on Gal Gadot to star as Barbie, but Gerwig changed the actress’ mind.
“It wasn’t that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that. This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn’t even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project,” Robbie told Vogue.
Robbie had already believed that her film would make $1 billion when she pitched it. During this conversation, she compared her idea to Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. She joked around during the interview stating, “And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”
