Project Runway’s most recent challenge asked the designers to create a new dress for animated TV character Marge Simpson.
With The Simpsons nearing its 25th anniversary on the air, Homer’s wife was in need of a new ensemble to replace her simple lime green, strapless frock. In a video message, her one request for the designers was, “No green!” She also quipped that Homer wanted it “easy to remove.”
Contestant Irna Shabayeva, the ultimate winner of the competition, designed a purple dress for the animated matriarch. The eggplant-colored number is a strapless, cocktail-length dress with a beaded bodice and flowing layers of fabric coming down from the sides and back of the dress, falling to the calf.
"I'm really happy with my look," Shabayeva said in a clip from the episode. "And I feel like it's a big anniversary so she's going to want to wear something spectacular."
The judges gushed about Shabayeva’s design after a model put it on display on Project Runway’s catwalk. Designer Isaac Mizrahi was in awe of its versatility, while guest judge, actress Abigail Breslin, said she’d be happy to add it to her own wardrobe.
"I love this dress,' she said. "I'm obsessed with it; I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I would totally wear it and I think Marge will."
