Maren Morris Stands By Calling Brittany Aldean ‘Insurrection Barbie’ Over Her Anti-Trans Comments

Country music artist Maren Morris is unapologetic for her previous tweets in support of the LGBTQ community, which sparked an uproar across the right-wing media.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan’s Cheap Shots, Morris expressed, “I don’t really have any tweets that I’ve regretted.” Morris went on to address her infamous “Insurrection Barbie” remark, which was a direct response to a transphobic Instagram post. “I will say I didn’t think my ‘Insurrection Barbie’ tweet to a certain someone would have picked up so much momentum, but I stand by it.”

In August 2022, Morris first ignited controversy when she clapped back at Brittany Aldean, the wife of “Try That In A Small Town” singer Jason Aldean, after Aldean made transphobic comments on her Instagram. Aldean posted a video of her doing her makeup, amid debates and efforts to restrict access to gender-affirming care, with the caption, “I’d really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase. I love this girly life.”

At the time, Morris didn’t reply to Aldean directly but rather in a comment on an X post by Cassadee Pope, who had first singled out Aldean. She wrote, “It’s so easy to, like, not be a scumbag human? Sell your clip-ins and zip it, Insurrection Barbie.”

This comment went viral and led to Morris’ emergence as a talking point on right-wing media outlets like Fox News. The clash between the two extended for several months via broadcast appearances, podcast appearances and social media, and Morris questioned whether she would attend the 2022 Country Music Awards. Aldean herself made an appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight and said she was “extremely surprised” by the angry response she had received to her Instagram caption.

Tucker Carlson referred to Morris as a “fake country music singer” and a “lunatic,” which led Morris to create “Lunatic Country Music Person” T-shirts, the proceeds of which went to Trans Lifeline and GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program.

Despite the backlash, Morris remains steadfast in her beliefs.

The singer has long actively used her platform to advocate for the inclusion of LGBTQ individuals in the country’s music industry and beyond. In June, she came out as bisexual on Instagram with the proud declarations, “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+” and “happy pride.”
