Maren Morris Performs With Drag Artists After Tennessee Bill Restricts Performances

Maren Morris and a number of mostly-Nashville stars, including Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Yola, Sheryl Crow and Jason Isbell, performed at the “Love Rising” concert alongside Tennessee drag artists earlier this week to protest the state’s anti-drag and anti-trans legislation.

The concert was organized in response to Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) signing a law banning drag performances on public property. Supporters of the legislation say that drag performances expose children to inappropriate sexual imagery while detractors argue that the law discriminates against the LGBTQ community and violates First Amendment laws.

“I introduced my son to some drag queens today. So, Tennessee, f—ing arrest me,” Morris said to the crowd. “He’s growing up here as a Nashvillian, and I just want to leave this world for him a little bit better than the one we’re in right now. And I feel like nights like tonight help do that.”

Morris sang “The Middle” and “Better Than We Found It” – a song the country star wrote for her son during the George Floyd protests – with drag performer Alexia Noelle Paris.

After her performance, Morris thanked Nashville and its LGBT community for making the concert possible on Instagram.

Aura Mayari, a season 15 alum from RuPaul’s Drag Race, shared a video from the event on Twitter and expressed gratitude toward everyone who attended the concert and donated money.
