Man With Weapons & Explosives Arrested Near Barack Obama’s Washington, D.C. Home

A man in possession of weapons and materials to make explosives who is wanted for crimes tied to the January 6 insurrection was arrested near Barack Obama‘s Washington, D.C. home on Thursday.

Taylor Taranto, 37, fled after being spotted and chased by Secret Service. He ran in the direction of the former president’s home but was caught before getting there.

Taranto’s van was close to the location of the arrest. It contained multiple weapons and supplies to make an explosive similar to a Molotov cocktail. When apprehended, he said he had explosives, but emergency responders did not discover any assembled devices, only finding materials.

Officials stated that Taranto had threatened a public figure on recent live streams posted to social media. He also had a warrant based on January 6 riot charges, but it is not known what he is accused of. Officials also reported that Taranto had been staying in Washington, D.C. for months, parking his van near the jail where many January 6 suspects were being held.

More than 1000 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the January 6 riot. Over 600 have pleaded guilty, and more than 550 have been sentenced.

The Metropolitan Police Department formally charged Taranto with being a “fugitive from justice.”

Taranto was a U.S. Navy veteran and a web designer for the Republican Party in Washington State’s Franklin County.

No one was hurt in Taranto’s arrest. It remains unclear if the Obamas were at home during the time of the arrest.
