A man who hit Rudy Giuliani on the back in a Staten Island, N.Y. store will have his charges dismissed if he doesn’t commit a crime for six months.
Giuliani had tried to cause an uproar over the situation, saying the touch was “like somebody shot me” and that he almost fell over in one TV interview, but prosecutors didn’t seem to agree.
Giuliani was at the ShopRite supermarket in support of his son Andrew Giuliani‘s bid to be the Republican nominee for Governor of New York in the upcoming election. Andrew wasn’t able to mine enough support from his dad’s stint as New York mayor and failed to secure the nomination, which went to U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin.
The man who hit him was Daniel Gill, a ShopRite employee, who approached him from behind and was seen hitting his back in a surveillance video, though Giuliani didn’t react strongly.
He allegedly also said, “What’s up, scumbag?” before he was arrested and charged with felony assault. The charge was later downgraded to misdemeanor assault and harassment.
The Assistant Richmond County District Attorney Darren Albanese said in a statement it would be “extremely difficult” to prove that Giuliani was legitimately injured in the altercation. The extent of his violation, according to Albanese, was that he “violated a basic social contract which is a lesson taught when we were young – keep your hands to yourself.”
Giuliani’s reputation has taken a steep nosedive after having high approval ratings for his performance as mayor during the September 11th terrorist attacks.
For several years, he was the personal attorney and an advisor to Donald Trump while he was President. Giuliani was a passionate voice in Trump’s team in favor of disputing the 2020 election results and is named in several criminal investigations relating to the Trump administration’s conduct.
Gill is retaliating by suing the city of New York for wrongful arrest, seeing $2 million in damages according to his Thursday filing.
