Man Opens Plane Door During Asiana Airlines Flight, Could Face 10 Years In Prison

A 33-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for opening the emergency door during a flight on Asiana Airlines. The airplane was flying from Jeju, a South Korean island, to Daegu and was a few minutes away from landing. There were about 200 passengers on the flight, including a group of teenage athletes who were flying to a track and field competition.

The incident was terrifying for passengers, as when he opened the door air blasted into the cabin. This caused people to scream and cry and some even experienced intense ear pain from the blast of air.

Twelve people were minorly injured from the incident with issues relating to hyperventilation. Nine of these people were taken to the hospital for breathing problems and were all released with no major injuries.

The man reported to have opened the door because he felt panicked and needed to get off the plane. He recently lost his job, resulting in him feeling more stressed than normal. He was sitting in the emergency seat which gave him access to the door. When the plane landed he was arrested for breaking aviation laws and may face up to 10 years in prison.

Typically, the emergency door is not supposed to open while the plane is in flight. This is due to the differing air pressures inside and outside the cabin. The flight happened to be on its descent when the incident occurred, 700 feet away from the ground, so there was not a big difference in the amount of pressure inside and outside the cabin, allowing him to open the door.

When seen outside the court, the man apologized to the teens, saying he simply just wanted to get off the plane.
