The Secret Service detained a man who stalked former First Daughter Malia Obama on multiple occasions.
Jair Nilton Cardoso, from Brooklyn, New York, was recognized by authorities as a man who had repeatedly tried to get into the White House in the past. On April 10, he showed up on a fourth floor of a Tribeca building and held up a sign asking for Obama’s hand in marriage. At the time, Secret Service agents found him and told him to leave Malia alone.
The 30-year-old showed up again two days later and followed Obama out of the building where she interns. The Secret Service found Cardoso in his apartment on April 13 and questioned him. They concluded he suffered from psychiatric issues and took him to a Brooklyn hospital for evaluation.
Cardoso has no prior arrests in New York City. Police were deciding whether to charge the man with stalking and/or harassment, but decided against it at the time, as he never posed a verbal or physical threat. The closest he got to Malia was standing outside of her office.
Obama is currently interning at the Tribeca Film Festival and reportedly for Harvey Weinstein. She will be attending Harvard University in the fall.
