The final words spoken by one of the pilots manning the ill-fated Malaysian Airlines flight were reportedly “goodnight Malaysian three seven zero.”
Previous accounts of the last words heard by the Kuala Lumpur air traffic control stated that they were simply, “alright good night.” The final report by the Malaysian authorities has come in response to criticism for neglecting to provide sufficient information and mismanaging the search for the missing plane.
"We would like to confirm that the last conversation in the transcript between the air traffic controller and the cockpit is at 01:19 (Malaysian Time) and is "goodnight Malaysian three seven zero," the Department of Civil Aviation said in a statement, reported The Guardian.
Although the new version of the last words is similar to the initial report – “Goodnight Malaysian three seven zero” is decidedly more formal and more typical of a pilot’s sign-off from the cockpit. Not long after those words were uttered, communication from the plane to traffic control was cut off, and the Boeing 777 took a sharp turn towards the Indian Ocean.
Malaysian authorities have yet to reveal whether the words came from the captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, or the co-pilot, Fariq Abdul Hamid.
Since the plane fell off the radar over three weeks ago, there’ve been a number of false leads in locating the missing aircraft. A search effort has been ongoing in the southern Indian Ocean in isolated waters far off the coast of Perth, Australia.
