An inmate in Wisconsin has allegedly confessed to committing the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach, whose death was the focus of the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer.
Photographer Teresa Halbach, who was the age of 25 at that time, was killed on October 2005. Her last known appointment was a meeting with Steven Avery, at his home in Wisconsin. She was supposed to photograph his sister’s minivan that he was offering for sale. Halbach’s vehicle was found partially hidden in the salvage yard, and bloodstains recovered from its interior matched Avery’s DNA. Later on, Detectives identified charred bone parts found in a burn pit near Avery’s home.
The inmate who has confessed the killing of the Halbach to filmmaker Shawn Rech will remain unnamed until Wisconsin law enforcement has access to declared confession.

“This person approached us 18 months ago and wrote a letter saying Steven Avery confessed to him. This person was trying to further the narrative that Steven Avery was guilty,” Rech told The Post. A year and a half later as the production was entering the fact-checking and legal review phase, Rech wanted to revisit the man’s letter.
“We found some problems with his story,” Rech said, “so I scheduled a prison call to confront him — Saturday morning.”
What the inmate revealed left Rech shocked.
“He immediately called his letter, from 18 months ago, a fake and said that he in fact killed Teresa Halbach in what he characterized as a tragic accident,” Rech said. The man allegedly decided to frame the homeowner at the scene, whom he didn’t know was Steven Avery.
Avery, 57, and his nephew, Brandan Dassey, 29, who was also charged as an accessory in the Halbach case, are currently serving life sentences for the murder of 25-year-old. However, both men maintain their innocence.
