U.S. Olympic skier Maggie Voisin won’t be able to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics after suffering an ankle injury during training on Friday.
Voisin, 15, was competing in freestyle and was expected to medal at Sochi. After winning the silver in the X Games, the Whitefish, Mont., native was picked up for the U.S. Ski Team. When she injured herself practicing on the Extreme Park course, doctors decided that she would not be healthy enough to compete during Tuesday’s race, reported Fox Sports.
The Extreme Park course has been criticized by a number of athletes, most notably, snowboarder Shaun White. White, who jammed his wrist, pulled out of the slopestyle snowboard competition to focus on an upcoming race this week.
Prior to her Games-ending injury, Voisin was the youngest Olympian competing for the United States. Although she won’t be able to take to the slopes, Voisin’s accomplishments at just 15-years-old won’t soon be forgotten.
"Maggie distinguished herself as one of the top slopestyle athletes in the world in qualifying for Team USA," said Luke Bodensteiner, executive vice president for athletics for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. "We're disappointed for her in being unable to start but have great respect for what she accomplished to get here."
