At her Rogers Arena concert in Vancouver, Canada, Madonna called out a fan in a wheelchair for sitting during her show. Footage of the interaction circulated on social media with fans criticizing the singer for her behavior. Others came to her defense.
“What are you doing sitting down over there?” Madonna asked in the video. The singer approaches the edge of the stage where she sees Vanessa Gorman, the fan. Once Madonna realized Gorman is in a wheelchair, she said, “Oh, okay. Politically incorrect. Sorry about that. I’m glad you’re here.”
Gorman, paralyzed from a motor vehicle accident in 1999, said she was not offended by what Madonna said and believed it was an honest mistake. Gorman did say she was surprised that the singer did not initially notice her bright pink wheelchair.
“Some people are in wheelchairs and can stand,” Gorman told TMZ. “She had no idea I was paralyzed.”
Madonna’s Celebration Tour approaches its final shows with plans to finish in Mexico City. The tour was delayed after Madonna experienced a bacterial infection that left her hospitalized.
Madonna also faced a lawsuit from two fans for starting her New York concert two hours late.
