Madonna has shared her frustrations over the progress of her biopic after producers told her to “downsize” her project.
The singer took to Instagram to talk about the direction of her biopic, writing, “After struggling for days in L.A., listening to producers and agents tell me why I couldn’t make my film — (I been working on it for 4 years!!!) downsize-down scale – think smaller – they say — I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged.”
She added, “I guess I should be grateful. It forces me to think outside the box. I did not have a normal life. I cannot make this in the normal way… We cannot shrink and make ourselves smaller… Should I make the story of my life into a series or a feature film?”
The 66-year-old noted that she spent time with friends and creatives to gain inspiration in taking on the film, saying that they all came to the decision to be “even more fearless” in their efforts to produce the picture.
The update comes after Madonna shared in July that the biopic was back in the works after a period of inactivity. The singer emphasized that she had been rewriting the script on her own and has plans to direct the film as a way of stopping “misogynistic men” from telling her story.
The film, Who’s That Girl, is named after the star’s 1987 album. It was initially called off early last year due to Madonna’s 40th-anniversary tour, which began in July 2023, but Universal Studios stated they were still interested in the project—indefinitely pausing the film until they could make it work with Madonna’s schedule.
Madonna was recently seen at a Billie Eilish concert with her new boyfriend, Jamaican soccer player Aikeem Morris, 28.
