Madonna is coming to the big screen.
The singer has teamed up with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, producer Amy Pascal, and Universal to co-write and direct an autobiopic about her life as an artist and celebrity.
“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer – a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said. She added that the film will center around music, stating, “Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive.”
Referring to her decision to direct and co-write the film herself, Madonna said, “There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me? It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
Cody and Madonna have both been teasing news of the biopic on Instagram. Though it’s currently unnamed, the singer did once call it Live to Tell.
Madonna, now 62, is a pop culture superstar with a career spanning nearly four decades. She first entered the music scene in the 80s and quickly rose to stardom with hits like “Material Girl” and “Like A Virgin.” Madonna became the best-selling female artist of all time. She broke boundaries talking about sex, race and religion, ultimately solidifying herself as a feminist icon.
Madonna also worked as an actress occasionally, on movies such as Desperately Seeking Susan and Dick Tracy. In 2011, she first tried her hand at directing with W.E starring Abbie Corning and Andrea Riseborough.
“Madonna is the ultimate icon, humanitarian, artist, and rebel,” said Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley. “With her singular gift of creating art that is as accessible as it is boundary-pushing, she has shaped our culture in a way very few others have.”
