Madonna is publicly calling out Canadian music artist Tory Lanez, claiming he infringed her copyright in the song “Pluto’s Last Comet” off his recently-released sixth studio album Alone At Prom. Lanez’s song is linked below:
In an 80’s-inspired Instagram carousel posted to Lanez’s account last Thursday, the 63-year-old singer’s posted a comment from her verified account that said, “Read your messages [Tor] illegal usage of my song get into the groove!”
Her comment seems to have been deleted after getting several thousand likes. Madonna has implied that she reached out privately about the matter, but received no response from the Lanez camp.
The alleged sample comes from Madonna’s track “Into The Groove,” which she recorded as part of the soundtrack of 1985’s Desperately Seeking Susan, a movie she also starred in. It seems that a synthesizer melody from “Into The Groove” may have been sampled without permission for the Lanez song.
The singer has yet to make it clear what she plans to do to escalate the complaint but told Rolling Stone “I am tired of being taken advantage of and I mean business,” through a representative.
Madonna could choose to sue Lanez for copyright infringement, which if successful could entitle her to financial compensation or a retroactive songwriting credit on “Pluto’s Last Comet.”
If Madonna carries out legal action, it will be the latest in a series of legal troubles for the Canadian rapper and singer. He was charged earlier this year for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. If he is convicted on all charges he will face up to 22 years and 8 months in prison.
