Macy Gray’s Storms Off Stage Dressed As ‘Toad In The Hole’ During ‘The Masked Singer U.K.’ Live Broadcast

Macy Gray made a memorable exit from the U.K. version of The Masked Singer after her elimination. The 57-year-old singer, who performed as “Toad in the Hole,” was pitted against the Bear costume during the show. Despite the audience’s strong reaction and the panel’s correct guess that it was Gray under the mask, her competitor was saved, sending Gray home. The decision prompted Gray to walk off the stage, visibly frustrated.

After her departure, Gray returned in the episode aired on Jan. 11 to unveil her identity and speak with host Joel Dommett. Dommett shared a clip of their interaction on Instagram, captioning it simply, “Lol.”

Despite the tension of the moment, Dommett later defended the judges’ decision during an appearance on BBC Radio 2. He noted that while Gray’s legendary voice was unmistakable, the judges opted to keep Bear, who was still an enigma to the audience. “It’s a win-win situation,” Dommett quipped since Gray still received the same monetary reward without the pressure of further competition.

Dommett’s playful reaction to Gray’s exit was also shared with BBC Radio 2. “You can’t be vexed when you’re dressed as a toad. I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off,” he said, calling the moment one of the most humorous in his career.

This marks Gray’s second time competing on The Masked Singer after participating in the U.S. version in 2023. During the season 10 finale, Gray, who performed as Sea Queen, joked about the challenges of wearing the heavy costume, calling it “hot in there.” She also previously revealed that she struggles with self-confidence and uses her onstage persona as a form of transformation, telling Us Weekly in September 2023, “I literally put on a cape and transform into the person that is brave and confident enough to get up there.”
