Macaulay Culkin Says He Hasn’t Spoken To Dad In Decades: ‘I Think He Kinda Hated Me’

Macaulay Culkin, star of the classic movie Home Alone, has revealed the depths of his feud with his estranged father, Christopher Culkin.

Culkin appeared on an episode of Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson’s podcast, Sibling Revelry, where he shared that he has not spoken to his father in decades.

Culkin and his partner, actress Brenda Song, welcomed their first child in 2021.

Culkin’s mother and father separated in the 1990s, a split that prompted a custody battle between the parents over their seven children. Culkin stated that since the separation, he has “wanted nothing to do with” his father.

He shared on the podcast, “I haven’t spoken to him in, what would it be, about 30-something years? He deserves it, too. He’s a man who – he has seven kids, and now he has four grandkids, and none of them want anything to do with him.

“I would know, as a man myself, I would know that I f—ed up,” Culkin said. “I must have done something wrong…I have more than an inkling that he does not feel that way. Like [to him] we’re wrong and he’s right. He’s one of those narcissistic, crazy people. Me and him were always butting heads.”

“Like I said, he was a bad man,” Culkin summarized. “As far as I know, he’s alive.”

“As far as I know, I think my older brother had some contact with him at one point. But I think that turned sour pretty fast again.”

Culkin speculated that he often thought Christopher, who was an actor himself, harbored “a certain amount of resentment towards me.”

“[My dad] wanted to be an actor, and he kinda did some stuff. He never really got as far as… on Broadway. And so then all of a sudden, he has this kid that didn’t look anything like him, to be honest. I look a lot like my mother. I don’t look like him. And right out of the bat, I instantly got the lead stuff in the ballet company. I instantly booked all these things like that. And I think he resented me for that. I think he kind of hated me a little bit for that.”

Culkin shared that growing up with his father, he had learned exactly what kind of parent to be to his own children, Dakota, 3, and Carson, 2, whom he shares with Song. “One of my earliest memories of him was: ‘When I grow up, this is how I’m not going to be with my kids.’ And now that I got kids of my own, it makes me even more, it kicks up some dust that I kinda go, ‘I can’t believe he was like that.'”

Culkin previously accused his father of emotional and physical abuse, an allegation that led to Christopher stepping away from the public. In 2016, Christopher gave a statement to The Daily Mail regarding Culkin, saying, “I don’t consider him a son anymore.”

Both Kate and Oliver are estranged from their father as well.
