Lynda Carter Calls Wonder Woman A ‘Queer Or Trans Icon’

In honor of the beginning of Gay Pride Month, Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter showed her support for the LGBT community.

Carter, who previously played the superhero Wonder Woman in the 1970s television series, posted a picture of the famed heroine on Twitter surrounded by rainbow colors, referring back to Wonder Woman’s queer origins.

“Happy Pride! So excited to celebrate with all my LGBTQIA+ friends and fans,” the actress captioned the post.

Many responded to the tweet by refusing to acknowledge Wonder Woman’s influence on the LGBTQ+ community.

“Wonder Woman IS NOT A SUPER HERO FOR GAYS!” one user commented.

Carter eventually replied back to the negative comment by writing, “You’re right. She’s a superhero for bisexuals!”

She then shared a link to a 2016 interview with Wonder Woman comics writer Greg Rucka in which he acknowledges the super hero’s same-sex relationships. The actress also went on to explain her perspective of the topic in a written post.

“I didn’t write Wonder Woman, but if you want to argue that she is somehow not a queer or trans icon, then you’re not paying attention,” Carter tweeted. “Every time someone comes up to me and says that WW helped them while they were closeted, it reminds me how special the role is.”
