‘Luther’ Will Come Back For Fifth Season, Idris Elba To Star

BBC America has given the green light for the wildly successful British detective TV show Luther to returnm with its main star Idris Elba, for a fifth season.

The fifth season will be comprised of four episodes, written by the show’s creator Neil Cross and will begin filming early in 2018.

“Neil, the BBC and I have been talking about a further season and I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all back together,” Elba, who stars as DCI John Luther, said in a statement. “I look forward to putting the coat back on.”

Season four of Luther was packaged as a two-hour TV movie and aired in December of 2015. By the end, there were still many unanswered questions. Cross and Elba hope to answer those questions in the new season.

“Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot,” Cross said in a statement. “What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business.”

Cross continued, “The thing is, we’ve been asking ourselves the same question. Because we love John and wonder what he’s up to. And as for me, I’m scared of the monsters … Who’s going to stop them, if not John Luther? In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they’d like to find out what happens next. It turns out they would. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to find out what happens next.”

Although it has no wins, Luther has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards. Elba has won a Golden Globe award, a SAG award, an NAACP Image Award, and a Critics’ Choice Award all for his portrayal of Luther.
