Luis Suarez Apologizes For Causing Giorgio Chiellini 'Physical Result Of A Bite'

Uruguayan soccer star Luis Suarez offered a wordy but ambiguous apology to Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini.

Luis Suarez Apology

Suarez, who appeared to bite into Chiellini’s left shoulder during their 2014 World Cup faceoff, apologized to the Italian defender on Twitter using some creative language.

“After several days of being home with my family, I have had the opportunity to regain my calm and reflect about the reality of what occurred during the Italy-Uruguay match on 24 June 2014,” the athlete began his apology.

Suarez continued, “Independent from the fallout and the contradiction declaration that have surfaced with these past days, all of which have been without the intention of interfering with the good performance of my national team, the truth is that my colleague Giorgio Chiellini suffered the physical result of a bite in the collision he suffered with me.”

In bullet points, Suarez added, “I deeply regret what occurred. I apologize to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family. I vow to the public that there will never again be another incident like.”

FIFA Bans, Fines Suarez

After the Uruguay/Italy game, FIFA launched an investigation into the alleged biting incident. The soccer governing body determined that Suarez had indeed bitten Chiellini – marking the third time on record he’d sunk his teeth into an opponent – and banned him accordingly. The standout forward will have to sit out nine official matches and is suspended for four months. FIFA also fined Suarez $100,000 Swiss Francs, or about $111,801.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” said FIFA Disciplinary Committee chairman Claudio Sulser. “The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suárez's guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code.”

In addition to playing for the Uruguayan National Team, Suarez suits up for the English Premiere League’s Liverpool F.C.
