Lucy Liu Reveals Why She Called Out Bill Murray’s Bad Behavior On Set Of ‘Charlie’s Angels’

Four years after Lucy Liu made headlines for alleging Bill Murray’s bad behavior on the set of Charlie’s Angels, the actress is now revealing why she chose to call him out.

In 2021, while filming the 2000 action comedy, Liu told the Los Angeles Times that she had a disconcerting moment with Murray, who began to “hurl insults” at her while they were shooting a scene.

While noting that she felt she had “the least amount of privilege” of anyone on set, the actress chose to defend herself against Murray anyway.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Liu said she stood by her decision.

“I really didn’t think about it,” Liu said about sticking up for herself. “I would’ve done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself. It’s an innate thing to do if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way.”

The actress added that she was never the type to stay quiet, saying, “If I was, it would have been a much easier road. But because I’ve never been that person, we had to find a way. There has never been an easy road, for me and for [other Asian American actors] – I really think it’s a group effort. I would never take credit. My career has not been paved by myself.”

Liu has not been the only one to come forward with claims of enduring unsettling behavior from Murray. In October 2022, Greena Davis alleged that Murray verbally berated her while waiting for a wardrobe adjustment on the set of Quick Change.

In 2022, the film Being Mortal was paused due to complaints about Murray’s actions on set.

Aside from the incident with Murray, Liu said she remained unscathed as a rising actor in the 90s because she was “aware that some situations were not safe,” choosing “not to get involved.”

She continued, “I think having that sense of self saved me from a lot of probably bad situations of either being taken advantage of or what people would think is quid pro quo … Everyone has an instinct, and I don’t know that everyone listens to it, but that’s one thing that I’ve always been able to channel and connect with.”
