Pedro Quezada won $338 million in the Powerball jackpot lottery drawing this past spring while he was still with his girlfriend Ines Sanchez, who now claims she deserves half of his winnings.
At the time that Quezada purchased the winning ticket, he and Sanchez had owned a New Jersey grocery store together and shared a home for ten years. They also allegedly shared an income. But the two recently split, with Sanchez moving out of their newly purchased Clifton, N.J., home.
Sanchez claims that since the money used to purchase the ticket was “theirs” that she is entitled to half of the $152 million left after taxes. Since the pair was never married, Sanchez’s attorney’s do not have a clear cut case to make. As of yet, the judge ruling on the case has not implemented a freeze on Quezada’s assets, nor has she thrown out the case.
A sizeable sum of Quezada’s winnings has already been spent, according to Sanchez’s attorney, reported The Record. The attorney alleges that the lottery winner sent $57 million his native Dominican Republic, gave $5 million away and spent $300,000 on his home in Clifton. Twenty million dollars reportedly can’t be located.
