Actor Daniel Dae Kim, known for his work on Lost and the reboot of Hawaii Five-0, announced on March 20 that he had tested positive for coronavirus. However, just two days later, Kim again took to Instagram to announce that he had made a rapid recovery after he took a prescribed anti-malarial drug.
On Friday, Kim addressed his fans in an Instagram video over ten minutes long. The actor said that he spent a few weeks in New York City, which has thousands of coronavirus cases, filming for his new show, New Amsterdam. After production on the show stopped temporarily due to the virus, Kim traveled back to his home in Hawaii. However, he noticed that his throat was scratchy on the flight, and after self-quarantining, started to feel aches, chest tightness, and a rising temperature. He soon after decided to take advantage of a drive-thru testing center in Honolulu, and found out that he did in fact have COVID-19. “The test itself was really awkward and a little painful, because they shove a huge swab into your nose and into your throat, but it was worth it, because of what I found out,” said Kim.

However, just two days later, Kim announced good news – most of his symptoms have receded. “I am happy to report that my progress has continued and I feel practically back to normal,” said the actor in the second update to Instagram. Kim also discussed what he was prescribed to help fend off the virus. A few of the pharmaceuticals he used were Tamiflu, a z-pack, and a glycopyrrolate inhaler. However, he described a drug that was a “secret weapon” – hydroxychloroquine, used to combat malaria. “I won’t say that it’s a cure and I won’t say definitively that you should go out and use this, but what I will say is that I believe it was crucial to my recovery… I believe the entire mixture of drugs was crucial to my recovery,” said Kim.
