Rapper DaBaby was cut from the Lollapalooza lineup following a series of homophobic comments he made at a Miami-area music festival last week.
The music festival’s organizers, who had given the Grammy-nominated artist the closing act on the final night of the four-day music festival. They tweeted that Young Thug would take the 9 p.m. spot instead.
The festival’s Twitter account posted a statement that read, “Lollapalooza was founded on diversity, inclusivity, respect, and love. With that in mind, DaBaby will no longer be performing at Grant Park tonight. Young Thug will now perform at 9:00pm on the Bud Light Seltzer Stage, and G Herbo will perform at 4:00pm on the T-Mobile Stage.”
The outrage started when DaBaby, whose real name is Jonathan Kirk, made degrading comments about the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV or AIDS.
While on stage, he said, “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two or three weeks, put your cellphone light in the air.”
In the days following his performance, celebrities from Madonna to Elton John, made statements publically condemning the rapper’s words.
After the initial waves of criticism, DaBaby took to social media to dismiss those who spoke out.
In a series of Instagram videos, he told critics to “shut the f— up,” adding, “What I do at a live show is for the audience at the live show,” he said. “It’ll never translate correctly to somebody looking at a little five, six-second clip from their god—- crib on their phone. It just don’t work like that.”
He continued, “Because, regardless of what you mother——- are talking about and how the internet twisted up my mother——- words, me and all my fans at the show, the gay ones and the straight ones, we turned the f— up.”
