Loki Confirms He’s Bisexual, 1st LGBTQ Character In Marvel Universe

Following the release of the third episode of the Marvel Cinematic Universe television Loki on the streaming service Disney+ on June 23, it was revealed that the title character (Tom Hiddleston) is bisexual. The series was created by Michael Waldron with each episode directed Kate Herron. The show follows a version of Loki from 2012 who escaped capture during the events of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The villain is soon captured by a mysterious organization called the Time Variance Authority who reveal to the God of Mischief that he is a variant of his normal self and his existence has caused a rupture in the multiverse. Loki is forced to work for the TVA by a high-ranking agent named Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson). After viewing his future brutal death at the hands of the villain Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Infinity War, Loki reflects on his crimes and ponders on his potential future as a variant.

After escaping from the TVA, the third episode titled “Lamentis” sees Loki join his female counterpart named Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) in her quest to find the mysterious group of powerful individuals called “The Time Keepers.” During the episode, Loki gets to know his female counterpart as they attempt to escape a planet that is about to be destroyed as it collides with a moon. At one point in the episode, the two have an exchange that reveals Loki to be bisexual. This makes the god of mischief the first major LGBTQ character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The only example of an LGBTQ beforehand was a member of Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) therapy circle played by director Joe Russo in Avengers: Endgame. Many fans on social media have commended the series for finally introducing a noteworthy LGBT character in the MCU, while others have criticized the scene for being very brief and accused the show of trying to hide this revelation by making the scene so brief.
