In a sweet viral moment, the singer Lizzo actually made good on a request that Aurielle Marie put into the universe. Marie is an author and essayist who will be honored at Out Magazine’s Out 100 gala and filmed a viral TikTok where she publicly asked Lizzo to let her wear a gorgeous magenta gown the singer wore at the 2019 American Music Awards.
Marie, who is genderqueer and uses she/they pronouns, even said that they almost missed the gown because “It was supposed to come Friday but arrived literally ten minutes before we left our flight for New York.” The author also posted a follow-up on Tuesday which showed the package of the dress arriving. Seeing their excitement and joy as they unpack and then try on the dress is infectious and inspiring.
Marie has published poetry in The Rumpus, Poetry Daily and more. Their debut collection Gumbo Ya Ya released in Fall 2021 through the University of Pittsburgh Press.
Other honorees of the out100 recognition, which Out compiles every year to lift up the most notable and impactful LGBTQ people every year, include comedian Jerrod Carmichael, actors Rafael Silva and Ronen Rubinstein who play a queer couple on the crime drama 911 and the singer Hayley Kiyoko.
For her latest album, Special, Lizzo has been nominated for six Grammy Awards including Best Album, Best Pop Vocal Album and Song of the Year for her single “About Damn Time.”
