Liverpool soccer star Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, have both died in a car crash in Spain.

Just after midnight on July 3, Jota and Silva were found dead after the older brother’s car crashed and burst into flames near Cernadilla, Zamora in northwestern Spain, according to police.

Spain’s Guardia Civil said in a statement that their investigation “points to a road accident due to a burst tire while overtaking” another vehicle, which occurred at 12:30 a.m., local time.

The police noted that the Lamborghini then caught fire.

Police mentioned that the bodies of the brothers were taken to a forensics unit in Zamora, where autopsies would be performed.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain,” the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said in a statement.

“Much more than a fantastic player with nearly 50 caps for the national team, Diogo Joto was an extraordinary person, respected by colleagues and adversaries, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community,” the federation went on to say.

Jota received 49 caps for the Portuguese national team, winning the UEFA Nations League in both 2019 and 2025.

He also played a significant role in Liverpool’s recent title-winning season, scoring six goals and offering four assists in 26 appearances.

The soccer star died just 11 days after he married his partner of ten years, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three children, including one who was born just last year.

“The news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honored the name of Portugal, and his brother, is unexpected and tragic,” Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said on X. “I offer my most sincere condolences to his family.”

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who played with Jota in the recent Nations League triumph, also paid tribute to his former teammate and Silva.

“It does not make sense,” Ronaldo wrote on X on Thursday. “We were only just together in the national team, you had only just got married.

“I send my condolences and all the strength in the world to your family, to your wife and to your children. I know that you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
