Melissa Gilbert, star of the original Little House on the Prairie series from the 1970s, has slammed former Fox News host Megyn Kelly for her comments on Netflix’s newly announced future adaption of the beloved books.
The return to the classic stories, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, which provide an extensively detailed account of a family’s daily life in late 1800s America, was confirmed on Jan. 29.
From 1974 to 1982, NBC ran a popular TV adaptation of the books, which aired for nine seasons and 204 episodes. Netflix’s remake is set to be led by executive producer and head writer Rebecca Sonnenshine.
Sonnenshine’s logline for the series summarizes the story as, “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical Little House books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”
Kelly shortly reposted a photo of the news with the comment, “Netflix if you woke-ify Little House on the Prairie I will make it my singular mission to absolutely ruin your project.”
Gilbert quickly responded to Kelly’s comment on Threads, writing, “Apparently Megyn tweeted (I’m not on that platform) asking Netflix to ‘Woke’-ify their ‘Little House’ remake. Ummm… watch the original again. TV doesn’t get too much more ‘woke’ than we did.”
She evidenced, “We tackled: racism, nativism, rape, misogyny, spousal abuse, antisemitism, addiction and every other ‘woke’ topic you can think of. Thank you very much.”
Wilder’s book series saw eight books published in the 1930s and 40s and one book published in 1971 following her death. To date, Little House on the Prairie has sold over 73 million copies. Additionally, NBC’s adaption was recently reported among the most streamed titles in 2024.
