Linwood Michael Kaine, son of former vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine, was arrested Saturday during a Trump rally in Minnesota.
The 24-year-old had to be wrestled to the ground when he, along with four other protesters, disrupted a pro-Trump rally. They allegedly chanted and lit fireworks inside the Capitol’s rotunda after the “March 4 Trump” rally began Saturday afternoon. The group was accused of setting of a smoke bomb, chanted and whistled. The group fled the scene but were followed by St. Paul police officers a few blocks away.
According to the pro-Trump rally’s Facebook page, the rally was scheduled to begin at noon, and Kaine was arrested at the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office at around 12:20 p.m. Kaine was held in the jail on suspicion of second-degree rioting, but was later released on Tuesday.
Senator Kaine himself issued a statement to the newspaper Twin Cities Pioneer Press.
“We love that our children have their own views and concerns about current political issues,” Kaine stated. “They fully understand the responsibility to express those concerns peacefully.”
Senator Kaine served as Hillary Clinton‘s running mate in the 2016 presidential election, and is known for his moderate appeal and experience as Virginia’s governor and mayor of Richmond, Virginia.
Linwood Kaine is the senator’s second oldest son; the senator also have a 26-year-old son, Nat, a Marine, and a daughter, Annella, a student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Across the U.S, hundreds of people rallied on March 4 to show support for President Trump and his new policies. In response, a wave of counter-protests were also held, including the one Linwood Kaine attended.
