Lincoln Chafee, Democratic presidential hopeful, thanked comedian Conan O’Brien on Thursday, after the host presented an unsolicited song for Chafee’s campaign on Conan.
O’Brien told his Conan audience on Wednesday night that he wanted to raise Chafee’s poll numbers from zero percent to one percent because “it seems like the nice thing to do.”
“No one is less popular than Democratic hopeful and former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee — who is currently at zero percent in voting polls — I’m not making this up,” the host explained.
“I’m not trying to get him elected, in fact, I’m personally not going to vote for him. But I think we should at least get him on the board,” O’Brien added.
The host then decided to share some facts about Chafee’s ideals with the audience and even handed out some Chafee 2016 hats.
O’Brien recruited musicians Aimee Mann and Ted Leo, to write and perform the campaign song for Chafee, set to the tune of the Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy.”
“He’s Lincoln Chafee, for president, you don’t have to vote for him, just get him to 1 percent,” the duo sang. “He’s Lincoln Chafee, let’s get him to 1 percent, he’ll never be president.”
“I want to thank Conan for the attention,” Chafee wrote in a statement released by his spokeswoman. “He’s a good sport and I would definitely come on the show to help his ratings.”
