Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote smash hit Broadway musical Hamilton, will be teaming up with composer Alan Menken to write the music and lyrics for Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action reboot.
Miranda and Menken will pen the songs for the much-anticipated The Little Mermaid reboot, Variety reports. Menken had written the music for the original animated The Little Mermaid, which hit theaters in 1989. Among the hits from the feature were “Part of Your World” and “Under the Sea,” sung by Ariel’s watchful guardian Sebastian.
Disney animation teased the news last week, posting a video of Miranda performing a version of “Under the Sea” with Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho. The clip is captioned, “Under The Sea w @auliicravalho! #Linstagram #LittleMermaid.”
Miranda, who penned the songs for Disney’s Moana is also teaming up with the studio for Mary Poppins Returns alongside Emily Blunt.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action picture – which will compete with Working Title’s starring Chloe Grace Moretz – follows a number of other live-action reboots of animated classics. The studio has already released Cinderella and The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast is scheduled to premiere early next year.
