Lily Allen Calls Out Wireless Music Festival For Lack Of Female Performers, Backlash Ensues

Singer Lily Allen called out the Wireless Music Festival for not booking enough female performers.

Allen tweeted on Tuesday a photo of the Wireless lineup, but removed all the male performers, showing that they only planned to have three women performing over a three-day festival. This led Allen to speak up about the issues of gender inequality in the music industry on Twitter.

She related the situation back to the #MeToo movement, noting that under representation is a factor in why women do not speak out about their situations more.

Her tweets got considerable backlash and some hateful comments. Allen then brought up how this was an example of misogyny in the music industry, and included the hashtag #TimesUp, which has been used to bring awareness to gender inequalities.

After Allen received comments about how festival goers would not want to see her perform, she then tweeted several other female artists who she believed deserved a spot on the lineup.

Wireless’s lineup has not been completely released yet, and Allen said she is hoping that the future announced spots will be given to more female performers.
