Rapper Lil Wayne is disavowing the Black Live Matter movement in a new interview with ABC News’s Nightline.
The rapper talked about how he got his start nearly 25 years ago under the guidance of rap legend Birdman, and how gang activity played a major role in his success.”I know how difficult it was to watch us come up with our pants sagging and our shirts all big and bandanas on and repping street things and talking about guns and every verse was about how I would run in your house and tie your parents up or something like that,” said Lil Wayne. “It wasn’t about what you were talking about, it was about how you were talking about it.”
“What do you say to people who call your music vulgar, misogynistic, offensive, degrading?” asked reporter Linsey Davis. “If that’s what you think about the music, if that’s what you categorize it under, so be it,” was the rapper’s response. “All those things made me who I am and I am a very successful man.”
Lil Wayne then discussed his new memoir about spending nine months in prison on an illegal weapon charge. Wayne had caused controversy recently when he said he considered racism to be a non-issue because he was a rich black man who had made it. When asked about the Black Lives Matter movement, Wayne didn’t have much to say. In fact, he had never heard of it before and thought it was a strange concept.
“It’s not a name,” he says. “It’s somebody got shot by police for a f–ked up reason. I am a young, black, rich motherf—er. If that don’t let you know that America understands that blacks f–king matter these days, I don’t know what it is.”
The interviewer, visibly bothered by Wayne’s comments, asked if he is connected to anything. “I don’t feel connected to a damn thing that ain’t got nothing to do with me,” he declared before pulling his mic off. “I ain’t no f–king politician.”
