On Wednesday, Nov. 20, family, friends, celebrities and fans alike paid tribute to the late Liam Payne.
Payne, a member of the former heartthrob boy band One Direction, tragically died on Oct. 16 at 31 when he fell multiple stories from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Immediately before his fall, Payne was observed acting in a disturbed and unsafe manner by multiple eyewitnesses. A hotel staff called the police to report Payne was trashing his hotel room, clearly on drugs and unstable. A witness to Payne’s death claimed that seconds before his fall, the singer said he blamed his former band for his mental state, among other disturbing and self-destructive statements.
Payne’s toxicology report was released on Nov. 7 and revealed amounts of alcohol, cocaine and other prescription drugs in his system.
Prosecutors ruled out the possible causes for death, “Self-harm of any kind and/or physical intervention by third parties.” It was also concluded that at the time of his death, Payne was “not fully conscious or was experiencing a state of noticeable decrease or loss of consciousness.”
Three individuals were charged in connection to Payne’s death.
Payne’s funeral was held in the English countryside northwest of London, in a 12th-century church.
Payne’s ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole and their son Bear Grey, 7, were in attendance, as were Payne’s four former bandmates, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles. Among the bereaved was also co-creator of One Direction, Simon Cowell. Fans and locals gathered on the outskirts of the private ceremony to pay their respects.
In a joint Instagram statement from Tomlinson, Horan, Malik and Styles, they mourned, “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
Payne was set to guest-judge on Building the Band, Netflix’s competitive music series. The show also features hosts Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland and AJ McLean.
