Liam Payne overdosed on drugs and had to be resuscitated prior to his tragic death.
The former One Direction star died on Oct. 16 after falling off the balcony of his hotel room in Argentina. The autopsy revealed that Payne had been under the influence of drugs at the time of his death.
According to sources close to the musician, Payne had overdosed in the past. One source said they were “shocked” when Payne’s manager signed him up for Netflix’s Building the Band, as he had just finished a stint in rehab.
“His manager pushed him to do the show and there were a lot of worried texts exchanged between us,” the source told Page Six. “We were shocked. There was no way he was in any shape to do this.”
“Liam had, in the last few months, become very isolated by a new group of people away from [those] who cared for him and who’d been trying to help him for a long time,” the source continued.
Another person close to Payne said he had been dealing with addiction for several years and that One Direction’s split in 2015 took a toll on the singer.
“He was heartbroken and never really recovered,” they said. “He was lost without his brothers.”
In the months before his death, Payne moved in with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. She traveled to Argentina with the singer but left two days before the accident.
Payne’s autopsy revealed the presence of multiple drugs, including crack and “pink cocaine.”
Following his death, Payne’s former One Direction bandmates paid tribute to the late singer in a joint statement on Instagram.
