Liam Payne, One Direction Star, Dies At 31
On Wednesday, Liam Payne, musician and former member of the band One Direction, fell from his balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, ultimately leading to his death at 31.
The artist was pronounced dead after falling multiple stories from his hotel room. In a statement, Buenos Aires Security Ministry communications director Pablo Policicchio said that he “had jumped from the balcony of his room.”
Police had been called to the scene around 5 p.m., saying that Payne died shortly after they arrived.
Local authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway, and an autopsy will be conducted.
Buenos Aires’ emergency services director Alberto Crescenti said in Spanish-translated comments that Payne suffered “a fracture at the base of the skull” following the fall.
Policicchio said police rushed to the scene after receiving an urgent call about an “aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
In the initial 911 call that was made, the hotel’s manager reportedly notified authorities that they had a guest “who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol,” adding, “he’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.”
In 2010, the singer shot to fame after joining the group The X-Factor U.K. with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, who would later become One Direction.
Payne leaves behind his 7-year-old son, Bear Grey, whom he shared with his ex, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
