Lesley Murphy, alum of the Sean Lowe’s season of The Bachelor, recently got a double mastectomy and shared a picture of the result to her social media accounts. Murphy chose to get the surgery after her doctor informed her she was BRCA2-postive, a rare gene mutation that puts women at a much higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
Murphy has since documented her journey before and after the surgery on social media, including a picture of her with a breast cake taken several days before her double mastectomy.
In one of her more recent shares, Murphy is photographed revealing her chest. The caption details some of the pain she has experienced as well as the help she has received from her mother.
“My Sunday best, or what I could manage to put on today with limited arm movements,” the caption starts. “My mom washed and dried my hair today. She dresses me in the mornings. She also measures my drains twice daily which are the tubes you see coming out of my lovely red apron I never take off. She is the freaking best.”
“Sometimes when I make the wrong movements it feels like my chest is detaching from my body, but all in all, I think my upper half is healing nicely!” the caption also reads.
Women who have the BRCA2 mutation have a 45 percent chance of getting breast cancer while those without have a 12 percent chance.
Murphy finished fifth on the seventeenth season of The Bachelor and now runs a travel blog titled “The Road Les Traveled.”
