Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has taken to his Instagram to thank the people of Yakutia for their homemade gift of their version of an Oscar.
Before he was awarded with his real Oscar earlier this year, it was reported that a group of filmmakers in eastern Russia had decided to honor DiCaprio by creating their own version of the award. The trophy resembles an Oscar but holds a “Choron,” which is a three-legged goblet that symbolizes peace, instead of a sword according to The Washington Post.
DiCaprio captioned the photo, “Thank you to the people of Yakutia for this wonderful gift, especially all of the women who gathered and donated the materials that went into creating the statue,” he captioned the snapshot. “As they wrote in their letter, Yakutia is home to the coldest inhabited place not only in Russia, but also on Earth – and the region is extremely vulnerable to climate change. Rising temperatures pose a major threat to its people, their way of life and their natural habitat.”
During his acceptance speech during the Oscars, DiCaprio warned people to the danger of global warming.
“Climate change is real. It is happening right now,” he said. “It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this, for our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.”
