Leonardo DiCaprio revealed why he turned down the role of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars, in a new interview on Wednesday.
DiCaprio revealed that he was in talks to play Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, but decided he wasn’t ready to take on the role.
“I did have a meeting with George Lucas about that, yes,” the actor told ShortList. “[I] just didn’t feel ready to take that dive. At that point.”
The Titanic star also spoke about other roles he had conversations about, but never actually took on, admitting that he didn’t feel prepared for those at the time either. Some of the roles include Robin in Batman Forever and Peter Parker in Spider-Man.
Though he may have passed on a few superhero roles, when asked if he would like to play a superhero, DiCaprio seemed open to the idea in the future.
“You never know. You never know,” DiCaprio said. “They’re getting better and better as far as complex characters in these movies. I haven’t yet. But no, I don’t rule out anything.”
DiCaprio remarked that he’s learned from his experiences working with some of the best actors in the business, and feels lucky to have just been given a chance in this industry.
“It’s sometimes emotional watching [What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and This Boy’s Life] because I feel like I’m that kid again,” the actor said. “Really just incredibly happy to have gotten a shot.”
