Leonardo DiCaprio is going even greener. Leo is one of many stars featured in a new campaign to pass the Clean Energy, Jobs and American Power Act which is before the U.S. Senate now, aiming to cut U.S. reliance on foreign oil supplies and promote more sustainable energy sources. The effort, called This Is Our Moment, has been launched by the Natural Resource Defense Council Action Fund, of which DiCaprio is an active trustee.
DiCaprio has filmed an online video and has recruited fellow stars such as Chace Crawford, Edward Norton, Jason Bateman and Forest Whitaker to produce videos as well. In the videos, the celebs urge viewers to lobby their senators. “Tell your senators to vote for strong clean energy legislation that cuts carbon pollution and creates jobs,” says Justin Long. The bill will also be “sustainable” and “paid for by the polluters,” they argue. The goals of the Action Fund include ensuring that candidates for office are aware of important issues and educating and motivating voters through new media.
Bateman urges listeners to “flood the inboxes of your senators," he says. "It freaks them out. They don’t even know how to use email and they see a bunch of stuff in the inbox. They know they’ve gotta do something.” Likewise, DiCaprio points a finger at Congress: “We’re going to be watching all you senators," he says, "very closely.” Tweet that! –NATASHA ALLOWAY with KADEEN GRIFFITHS
