Lena Dunham was seen for the first time in seven months at the Trans Day of Visibility rally in Washington, D.C. on March 31.
Multiple other public figures spoke at the rally, including Maxwell Frost, Summer Lee and Katherine Clark, who all took to the stage to speak in support of trans rights and condemn the new laws put in place by the Trump administration. The rally was hosted by the Christopher Street Project, a group that launched in January to advocate for transgender individuals.
Dunham has not been seen since September 2024. She previously cited incessant body-shaming as a reason she was taking a step back from the industry.
In connection, Dunham’s upcoming semi-autobiographical series Too Much will star Megan Stalter as Dunham.
In July 2024, Dunham told The New Yorker, “I was not willing to have another experience like what I’d experienced around [my HBO series Girls] at this point in my life… Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again.”
She continued, “It was a hard choice – not to cast Meg because I knew I wanted Meg – but to admit that to myself…I used to think that winning meant you just keep doing it and you don’t care what anybody thinks. I forgot that winning is actually just protecting yourself and doing what you need to do to keep making work.”
“I remember looking at Meg and being, like, ‘You are my muse. You inspire me every single day to go home and tap out pages upon pages.’ I definitely don’t want to be my own muse.”
In January 2024, Dunham commented on the re-emergence of her show Girls to E! News, saying, “I am so touched and honored that young people this cool and on their s— are responding to the show… I never made the show imagining that it would be seen at all, much less seen in ten years. I’m just so grateful that it still resonates with people.”
