Colombian representatives erupted in cheers after the country’s Senate approved a law prohibiting the marriage of minors on Nov. 13, following a 17-year campaign to ban child marriage.
Footage posted to X by House of Representatives of Colombia member Alexandra Vasquez shows representatives cheering and hugging each other after finding out the law had been approved on Wednesday, after a lengthy debate. Vasquez and Rep. Jennifer Pedraza have been pushing the bill since 2007.
According to a local news report, the bill prohibits marriage between minors under 18 and between minors and adults. The bill requires Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s signature for final approval.
