LeBron James Endorses Hillary Clinton For President

Star of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers LeBron James has come out in support of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The endorsement was made Sunday evening, just one day before Clinton will visit Akron, Ohio, James’s hometown. In his op-ed piece, James describes his hopes and goals for Ohio, one of the biggest swing states. He writes about his childhood, growing up in poverty, but being surrounded by mentors and supporters helped him succeed. “We give kids in Akron the resources and opportunities they need to stay in school and reach their dreams through education,” James wrote of his Lebron James Family Foundation.

“No one achieves greatness alone. And it takes everyone working together to create real change,” Lebron said. “When I look at this year’s presidential race, it’s clear which candidate believes the same thing. Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty. And when I think about the kinds of policies and ideas the kids in my foundation need from our government, the choice is clear. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”

The op-ed piece explains multiple policies Clinton has proposed that James agrees with, and that he thinks will greatly help the youth in Akron and Northeast Ohio. He cites her plan to make colleges affordable, as well as her commitment to end violence, especially against African-Americans. “I support Hillary because she will build on the legacy of my good friend, President Barack Obama,” he said. “I believe in what President Obama has done for our country and support her commitment to continuing that legacy.”

While Clinton has received a multitude of endorsements during this presidential race, one from an extremely popular basketball star could help on the social side, gaining the attention of Ohio sports fans in an important swing state. According to recent polls, 43.4 percent of likely voters in the state support Donald Trump, while only 41.2 percent support Clinton. In 2008 and 2012, however, Obama carried the state.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done in Akron, Northeast Ohio, and all across our great country,” concludes James. “We need a president who understands our community and will build on the legacy of President Obama. So let’s register to vote, show up to the polls, and vote for Hillary Clinton.”
