Leah Remini‘s A&E documentary series Scientology and the Aftermath intends to give a voice to those the Church of Scientology have hurt or silenced throughout the years. However, the Church of Scientology is accusing Remini and her show of inspiring a murder outside its headquarters earlier this month.
Chih-Jen Yeh, 24, was a security guard working for the Church of Scientology. He was allegedly stabbed in the neck on Jan. 10. Yeh was then taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and died. Yeh’s assailant, according to the Sydney Morning Herald‘s report, was a 16-year-old boy. A “purification ceremony” was held that day for child’s mother, which Yeh was escorting him to.
Karin Pouw, a spokeswoman for the Church, blamed Remini and her program in a letter to A&E Networks Group, chastising their “vicious religious hatred and propaganda” for inspiring the boy’s brutal actions. “The attacker was inspired by an anti-Scientology website that featured your people and included a link to Remini’s show,” Pouw had written.

“Week after week, month after month, and now year after year, this series has poisoned the airwaves in an avowed effort to create hatred against the Scientology religion and Scientologists,” Pouw continued. “Hatred and propaganda always find their mark, especially among those weak and vulnerable to their appeals. And now it has born strange and bitter fruit. For years, A&E executives ignored our warnings that the series was inspiring bigotry and violence. You knew what you were doing. Your intent was to stir up hate and turn it into cash. Now somebody has been murdered. Your indifference and obsession with stirring hate underwrote this murder.”
Law enforcement officials have given no indication that the boy watched the show or was affected by it in any manner. Remini, meanwhile, has yet to respond to the Church’s allegations. However, in an interview last month with Us Weekly, she did confess that she receives threats of her own from Scientologists. “They try to destroy lives,” she candidly said. “I just know it’s what Scientology does. They just use any avenue they can.”
