Lea Michele Jokes About Being ‘Illiterate’ After Calling Rumor ‘Sexist’

Lea Michele, the former Glee star, had been the butt of many jokes in recent months on social media claiming that the actress was illiterate.

In the last year, theories grew on platforms like Twitter and TikTok that Michele had her lines read to her in previous roles supported by videos of the actress fumbling her lines.

What initially started as a simple joke appears to have become a genuine conspiracy theory festering on social media.

Michele had referred to the comments as “sexist” in the New York Times, stating that the same thing would not happen to a man. She went on to say “I knew my lines every day” when starring in Glee, and has even had books published in the past.

This week, Michele, who is currently starring in Broadway’s Funny Girl, decided to lean into the joke.

At the Tony nominations announcement this week, Michele joked that “I memorized it” when handed a sheet of names to read.

Then, in a video recently uploaded to TikTok, Michele added a text to the video which read “calling on Jonathan to read me the comments on my first TikTok,” which likely refers to her close friend and fellow actor Jonathan Groff.

Fans of the actress lauded her for diving head-first into self-mockery.

Michele has been called out in the past for bulling during her years on Glee.
