Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy had set the wheels in motion for a Glee spinoff centered on the musical dramedy’s star, Lea Michele, reports claimed Tuesday. By Wednesday, the rumors had already been shut down.
A rep for Fox told the Los Angeles Times that Michele does not plan to have a spinoff from the hit series. However, the network did not deny the possibility of such a plan coming to fruition in the future.
On Tuesday, media headlines signaled that Murphy had the project in the earliest stages of development, based on a source who spoke with RadarOnline. “[The spinoff] will be announced soon,” the insider revealed to the entertainment site.
“They’re making the deals now, and it also presents a viable exit plan for the main Glee series itself,” the source added. “In that, some of its core cast would also migrate to the Lea Michele project as Glee is showing signs of aging.”
The spinoff speculation comes on the heels of Murphy revealing that Glee was currently in its penultimate season – its sixth season would be its last. With a number of the show’s older characters out of high school and migrating to New York, it has seemed plausible that a Michele-led Glee spinoff would land in the Big Apple. Furthermore, the younger additions to the Glee cast have failed to gain the traction of their predecessors, making it hard to fathom that it could go on without the likes of Michele, Chris Colfer, and Naya Rivera.
Glee returns to Fox for its third episode of season 5 “A Katy or a Gaga” on Thursday, following a four-week hiatus during the World Series.
