Tom Girardi, husband of Real Housewives star Erika Jayne, has been sentenced to prison.

Girardi, 86, is a lawyer based in California, most notable for inspiring the Erin Brockovich story. In August 2024, he was accused of embezzling millions of dollars from his clients.

Now, he has been sentenced to 7 years and 3 months in prison and must pay $2,310,247 in restitution along with a $35,000 fine. The sentencing was handed down in a Los Angeles courthouse by Judge Josephine L. Staton.

Girardi has also been ordered to surrender himself to federal authorities by July 17.

The charges were filed against him after multiple clients came forward, including survivors from a 2010 gas pipeline explosion and victims of a 2018 Lion Air collision.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli spoke out about the sentencing in a press release.

“This self-proclaimed ‘champion of justice’ was nothing more than a thief and a liar who conned his vulnerable clients out of millions of dollars,” he said.

Girardi’s lawyers tried to negotiate with the judge over concerns about his health, primarily his struggle with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Attorney Sam Cross also raised the question of whether Girardi should be allowed to die in prison, given his declining health.

Neuropsychologist Dr. Diana Goldstein declared him fit to stand trial, and his lawyer’s pleas did not sway the judge’s verdict.
