It was reported that the legendary R&B soul singer Lauryn Hill was going to make a surprise guest appearance during The Weeknd’s set but in the end she was a no show.
The singer’s representative issued a statement after the Grammys explaining the confusion:
“The Grammy’s announced a performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill prematurely and without approval. Ms. Hill had concerts all weekend, leaving no time to prepare, and was uncertain she would even be able to make it to LA in time to rehearse for the event.
“Any performance that could have happened was never confirmed, and should not have been advertised as such,” the statement read. “Ms. Hill was invited to do a collaboration with an artist she appreciates. The performance was intended to be a surprise and unfortunately due to its last minute nature, was unable to come to fruition.”
Hill wasn’t the only singer who didn’t make it to the award show. Rihanna was forced to cancel her highly anticipated performance due to bronchitis.
Recording Academy President Neil Portnow confirmed that Hill showed up for the dress rehearsal Monday morning but left and didn’t come back.
“We were ready up until the moment of the downbeat of that performance for her to step on the stage,” Portnow said.
