After taping Monday night’s The Late Late Show, host James Corden learned of the attack at the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. After emptying the studio audience, Corden went back in front of the camera and delivered a brief speech, sharing his thoughts, and offering his condolences to those harmed in the attack, now believed to be an act of terror.
“It shocks me every time we hear this sort of news that attacks like this can happen,” Corden said. “But especially when there will be so many children at this concert tonight.” As of now, 22 people have died from the attack and at least fifty more have been injured.
Corden, who was born in raised in England, then went on to discuss the Manchester that he knows, and how he feels the vibrant life in the Manchester community, will allow them to come back strong from the most recent attack.
“[Manchester] is famous for incredible music – Oasis and Joy Division – it was the birthplace of the leader of the suffragettes, it’s the home of the inventor of the first computer. It’s a place full of comedy, and curry, and character,” the host said, speaking to how the world may know the city.
“But when I think of Manchester, the place that I know, I think of the spirit of the people there. And, I’m telling you, a more tight-knit group of people, you will be hard-pressed to find. Strong, proud, caring people with community at its core. And if it is even possible, the spirit of the people of Manchester will grow even stronger this evening.”
In closing, Corden reached out to those affected by the attack. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Manchester tonight. All of the staff at the Manchester Arena, the security teams, all of the emergency services, Ariana and her team, and all of those families affected by tonight.”
